Every day, 1 in 5 Kiwi kids go without the basics most of us take for granted. This has a profound impact on their health, education and self-esteem.
Thanks to our generous supporters, Variety is changing this one child at a time.
With your help, when a child is going without basic essentials, we give them exactly what they need – like warm clothing, bedding, stationery, a school uniform and proper shoes.
When a boy or girl is missing out on extra-curricular opportunities, we give them the chance to join in – whether it’s swimming or music lessons, going to school camp, trying out a new activity, or pursuing a goal in the arts, sport or education.
And when they require an extra hand, we provide funding for additional needs, like medical or mobility equipment, therapeutic care, tutoring, or a digital device.
We know that not all kids need the same things.
That’s our difference at Variety.
We give each child or young person what they need for a happier, healthier childhood – the childhood that every Kiwi kid deserves.
Kiwi Kid Sponsorship
Now in its eighth year, Variety’s flagship Kiwi Kid Sponsorship programme supports 6000 young New Zealanders and their whanau. Each child is individually matched with a sponsor who provides tailored support for items such as clothing, shoes, bedding, school uniforms, stationery, school camp, sport and performing arts, as well as medical expenses. Funding is directed to meet the specific needs of the individual sponsored child.
Become a Variety Kiwi Kid Sponsor for as little as $50 per month. Find out more.
Variety is there for children in all sorts of challenging circumstances. We fund a broad range of requirements, from much-needed medical equipment, to life-changing mobility needs, and basic essentials for Kiwi kids in need.
Our specialised grants meet a wide range of grass-roots needs for children aged 0-18 years and also offer support to organisations that assist children.
Beds for Kids
One in ten children from New Zealand’s poorest communities do not have a bed to call their own. Many share with family members, or take turns sleeping on the couch, the floor, or a worn mattress, making them prone to respiratory and other preventable illnesses. Variety partners with the Ministry of Health’s Healthy Homes Initiative, to provide children and young New Zealanders with beds and warm bedding of their own.
